Utm Universal Transverse Mercator – The universal transverse mercator (utm) system is a specialized application of the transverse mercator projection. Gps receivers can display locations in utm coordinates. The strips, called zones, are numbered one through sixty, starting from the 180th meridian and moving west to east. Zones generally cover 6 degrees of longitude and 8 degrees of latitude.
